Sports for Development

Sports help to ‘give back’ headship to disadvantaged communities by offering opportunities
for leadership and showcasing talents.

Leadership, Teamwork &
Character Through Sports

Our approach on Sports for Development project engages youths in team-based sports to teach teamwork, leadership, and most importantly used as a tool for behavior change. Youths also participate in workshops on sexual and reproductive health, waste management, and gender parity. Our sports programming acts as an avenue of inviting youth to participate in additional climate change activities such as waste recycling, cleaning of our natural resources such as rivers.

Facts and figures about
youth in Mathare

Mathare Youth

Unemployment in Kenya stands at 40%, with 70% of those unemployed between 15-35. This high level of unemployment contributes to escalating incidents of crime and insecurity in the country. Among the urban poor, the majority of young people has little or no workplace skills and is therefore largely excluded from productive economic and social life. In Mathare many female youth turn to prostitution as a means of livelihood, with male youth resorting to joining gangs and engaging in criminal activities.

Why sports is necessary

41% of Mathare’s population is below 25, half of 18-25 year olds are unemployed – part of a poverty cycle that impacts on every aspect of a young person’s life. There is a lack of formal education because of an insufficient number of schools, children as heads of household and prohibitive school costs at 20% of the average household income.

Benefits of sports for development

Reducing Anti-social Behavior

Interventions focused on young people at risk of anti-social and criminal behaviour frequently involve physical exercise and/or participation in sporting activities as a primary vehicle to bring about behavioural change in both the short to medium term.

Harnessing Youth Potential

A well trained and empowered youth population is a valuable asset for national development and presents an investment potential for social, political and economic growth.
